Fire Blight on Pear Trees: How to Prune It Out and Prevent It
Blackened shoots bent like a shepherd's crook usually mean fire blight.
Pears are generally tough, but two problems account for a lot of worried questions: fire blight, which can blacken shoots almost overnight, and rust, which paints the leaves orange. Knowing which pear you have also changes when you harvest and what you watch for.
If shoot tips look scorched and hooked, go straight to the fire blight guide. Not sure if your tree is a fruiting pear or a Bradford? Use the pear identification chart.
